In this 4 week course students will carve a small-scale project. The course will introduce students to the tools and techniques for reductive carving in soapstone (a material that is soft enough to work by hand). This course will teach the principals of carving; from tool manipulation to delineation of forms to finishing techniques.

Artist Instructor: Laura Moore
Laura Moore is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice is rooted in sculpture. The artist works primarily in stone, although her practice extends into wood relief, drawing and photography. Moore received an MFA from York University and a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Recent exhibitions include Small Monuments a Zalucky Contemporary (2015), Sculpture by the Sea in Aarhus, Denmark (2015), Material World at the Indianapolis Art Centre in Indiana (2015), TH&B UNITED at the Cotton Factory in Hamilton (2015) and Possible Futures: What is to be done? The Windsor-Essex Triennial of Contemporary Art at the Art Gallery of Windsor (2014). Moore’s sculptures have been installed in numerous public settings, most notably at Google in Kitchener as part of the Contemporary Art Forum Kitchener and Area Biennial (CAFKA) in 2014. The artist is a transient member of Studio Pescarella in Pietrasanta, Italy, and her work will be presented in a solo exhibition at the MacLaren Art Centre in Barrie in the summer of 2016.
