“Self Portrait as Trenchant Metaphor for a Complex Person”, oil on teak, 2018.

March 21 – April 4, 2018

Reception: Thursday, March 22, 7-9pm

Artist Lauchie Reid presents a new collection of diminutive paintings exhorting an embrace of humility, tradition, affection, science, and material strength, while personally acknowledging the inherent paradoxical absurdities in doing so.

Lauchie Reid is a Toronto, Canada-based painter, illustrator, and educator. Focused primarily on portraiture, landscape, and still life, his work explores the role of traditional oil painting as a relevant and timeless method of celebrating human achievement while rejecting the notion of reserving these rites to specific social roles and classes.

The juxtapositions of historical technical processes against contemporary technology, outmoded aesthetics, a bizarre sense of humour, and a pleasantly melancholic view of the psychological and emotional underpinnings of nostalgia all play significant roles in his picture making practice.

Reid has exhibited as a founding member of Team Macho since 2005 in Friends for Life (June 2005), Team Macho is a Tough Man (May 2006), Fancy Action Now (May 2007), Kitschy, Gay, And Over In a Second (September 2008), Hibernation Sickness (Nov 2010) and AXIS MUNDI at the Art Gallery of Ontario, Canada (2012). Reid has exhibited his solo work with Narwhal Contemporary in Stay Gold (December 2008), Life Drawing (March 2009), That Hideous Strength (May 2010), The World Turned Upside Down (Oct 2011) and Hyacinths and Thistles(Sept 2014).

In early 2018, Natural Pigments announced Lauchie Reid’s appointment as its newest Artist Ambassador.  On Sunday, April 15, 2018, Reid will be teaching a full day hands-on workshop at ARTiculations titled Understanding Oil Paint with Lauchie Reid – A practical approach to methods and materials in professional oil painting.
