An exhibition of photobooks published by Anchorless Press, featuring works by Marco Buonocore, Alice Dixon, Aaron Friend Lettner, Kirby Pilcher & Luke Strosnider, Anthony Randall & Robyn York.

Anchorless Press is an independent publisher focusing on artist books that challenge traditional publishing conventions using the medium of the publication as a work of art. Through collaboration and careful attention to materials, each book employs various printing and binding methods, creating standalone ‘projects for the page’.

BIOS

Marco Buonocore is a self-taught photographer and printer whose work revolves around the analog darkroom and exploring the limits of silver gelatin materials

Alice Dixon was born in Toronto, Canada. She holds a degree in Photographic Studies from Ryerson University. Dixon has been exhibiting and curating for over ten years. Her experience extends internationally having lived and worked in Paris, France. Dixon was the Head of Exhibitions and Publications at Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography from 2009 to 2013. She is currently a graduate student in planning and environmental studies at York University. The focus of her research is green infrastructure and community health in planning.

Student of photography, theatre and percussion Aaron Friend Lettner continues to practice different methods of storytelling. Questions about the potential of language and symbolism form ideas that materialise as books, installations and performances. Aaron holds a BFA in Photography from Ryerson University and lives between Vancouver and Toronto.

Kirby Pilcher is primarily interested in how photographs can be used as language to construct narrative in the book format. He is an artist and educator living in Rochester, NY, where he teaches photography at the University of Rochester and the Rochester Institute of Technology. His work can be found in the permanent collections and libraries of the Center for Fine Art Photography, the Visual Studies Workshop, The George Eastman Museum, and the University of South Dakota Art Galleries.

Anthony Randall is a Toronto-based artist and educator whose artwork involves the manipulation of pre-existing materials.  He teaches at Humber College in the Early Childhood Education program and is completing PhD coursework at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE).  He is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) and has exhibited work in Toronto and Vancouver.

Luke Strosnider makes images with the specific intent that they’ll become a book. He studied at the Photographic Center Northwest (Seattle, WA) and received his MFA at Visual Studies Workshop (Rochester, NY). His publications can be found in the collections of the George Eastman House, the Library of Congress, and the Beinecke Library at Yale University, among others. He currently resides in Chicago, IL.

Robyn York is a photographer, designer and book artist whose work explores collecting, memory loss, and impermanence of place. She runs Anchorless Press, an independent creative publishing project that works with artists to publish photo-based artists’ books, and founded Portage Publishing in response to the need for transparency and support for self-publishers.
